The government of South Africa enjoys the upper hand when it comes to foreign investment attractiveness. As the country holds a strategic location in the African continent, it is positioned as a significant country due to the size of its economy and its ranking as an upper-middle-income country. The country faced the challenge of a power shortage in 2007, which impacted the industrial sector, while the country was already suffering from high inflation and outdated infrastructure facilities. Supported by residential and infrastructure construction activities, the construction industry in South Africa is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 9.61% over the forecast period.

All Things Koh Samui Wedding: Clever Tips And Useful Hints ...

Weddings are important and require a myriad of decisions to be made ahead of time. There are no specifically right or wrong turns to take when it comes to planning and going through with your wedding. However, research can prove to be useful in helping you set in stone the decisions you feel are right for you. The tips below are there to help point you on the right path to your happily ever after.

When planning a destination wedding you should find out how many people are willing to attend. You may think only a few can afford to get there, but it might turn out that most of your family has money put away for a vacation and they'd like to use your wedding as the venue!

A fashionable and chic color palette is the best way to visually tie all aspects of your wedding and rehearsal together. The most effective color palette will always include at least three distinctive components: a main color, a bold accent color, and a touch of a metallic hue like gold, silver, or platinum.

Traditions are a very nice thing, but do not kill yourself in order to fulfill every wedding tradition you have ever heard. The most important aspect of the wedding is that you are making a commitment with the person you love. Everything else should just be a fun way to celebrate that.

Only invite people to your wedding who matter to you. It isn't meant to be a show of wealth or reputation. It is a day for you to share with the person you plan on spending the rest of your life with. Keep your list limited to anyone who you would want to see in the photos you'll be looking at for the rest of your life.

Do not expect to please everybody with the choices you will be making. This day is for you, and it is based on what you like. Do not let anyone who may criticize get you down or make you change your mind. Do what really makes you happy because you will remember this day for a longer time then anyone else will.

To save money on your wedding photographer, consider hiring a student. Someone who is just learning the trade might charge you significantly less, or even provide services for free. The benefit to them is that they build their portfolio. The benefit to you comes in the cost savings.

When you are marrying someone, it is important to work as a team when it comes time to plan your wedding. Try to optimize your decisions by coming to a compromise on the disagreements that you have so that you can both be as happy as possible when your big day comes.

Do not wait until the rehearsal to begin preparing your flower girl and ring bearer for their role. Make time with the children to practice their movements and placing during the ceremony. Children thrive on structure and teaching them early will build anticipation to do their best. Explain all the importance that they carry on this day and they will adopt a responsible attitude.

Find out before your wedding ceremony when and where you are permitted to take photographs. Some venues won't permit flash photography at all, while some officiants don't want anyone taking photos while they are conducting the ceremony. If you find out the rules ahead of time you can plan out the shots you are allowed to take beforehand.

It is important to make the right decisions that you won't regret making later. Planning your wedding is entirely personal and the decisions differ from individual to individual. Therefore, there are no right or wrong decisions. Apply the tips from the article above to help you feel that your wedding was a success with no regrets.

There will be additional information available on Koh Samui weddings. Have a look at Andy S. Bophut's site, there will be lots more information about Thai wedding which not covered on this page. Visit Author's blog now to uncover further info.

To STEAM or not to STEAM: Waiting to hear - Second Life Tiny Life ...

Worked on a few new pet beds and a new Adventurer?s Hat last night and was worried about perms changing. Ran across something in the Building and Texturing Forum linking to this useful hidden feature:

Debug Permissions is a tool which shows you granular attributes of your Second Life items. Permissions have numerous subtleties and with some practice, Debug Permissions can help you figure these out. You should have a firm understanding of next-owner permissions before using Debug Permissions.

Oh hey, that?s useful! Wish I?d seen it before?

Link: Debug Permissions ? Second Life Wiki

I applied for STEAM 7 last night; shouldn?t have left it so late as it?s limited to 150 shops, one shop per owner. As Dhughan is my associate and business partner (and he?s a putterer) ::whistles and rolls eyes:: I put in for a slot.

Now wait and see, and work on the gift. It?ll be based on a short story of Wells? that I must read. If I don?t make the cut I?ll work it up as a new product, it?ll be a good exercise.

Had hoped to start a Thirst Fursday event (drinks on the shop roof, music?) but the typist is going on an Adventure the next day. I may do it on a monthly basis. So if I happen to be inworld, COME OVER, shop address is in picks.

Dress code: anything with fur ? furry, tiny, fur on clothing, or pets. Horses included. Should be fun, the roof SHOULD be strong enough?

French Filmmaker Chris Marker Dies at 91 - The Hollywood Reporter

Prolific and enigmatic French filmmaker and artist Chris Marker has died, just one day after his 91st birthday.

Marker, born Christian Fran?ois Bouche-Villeneuve, was best known for his award-winning documentary Sans Soleil about human memory and 1962 time travel drama La Jetee. La Jetee is said to have inspired Mamoru Oshii?s The Red Spectacles and Terry Gilliam?s 12 Monkeys.

PHOTOS: Hollywood's Notable Deaths of 2012

Marker was notorious for keeping his private life to himself, shunning interviews and refusing to be photographed. He even teased the world by claiming he was born in Mongolia despite the fact that he actually hailed from Paris suburb Neuilly-sur-Seine. However, the ?friend to several famous directors of what was known as the ?Left Bank Film Movement? like Alain Resnais, Agnes Varda and Henri Colpi, Marker wasn?t a misanthrope according to Costa Gavras who told French newspaper Le Monde on Monday: ?He was a profoundly honest man, both politically and cinematographically.? ?

He worked as assistant director on Resnais? famous Holocaust film Night and Fog. Resnais has described Marker as "the prototype of the 21st century man".

Marker certainly wasn?t shy with his art. He worked as a journalist and a critic for famed French film magazine Les Cahiers du Cin?ma. His first film was Olympia 52, a documentary about the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. His 1961 title Si Cuba was banned in the US since it supported Fidel Castro and criticized America.

Cannes Film Festival topper Gilles Jacob described Marker in a tweet on Monday: ?curious mind, tireless filmmaker, poet in love with cats, videographer, secret character, immense talents? and added that we are all ?Chris Marker?s orphans.? ?

In addition to making a name for himself in the art world with his films and published novels, poems and essays, Marker was also a member of the French Resistance movement.? Other well-known Marker films include "AK," an essay about Japanese director Akira Kurosawa, and A Grin Without a Cat, his 1971 film about the 1968 uprisings in Paris and MoMa multimedia installations ?Level 5? and ?Immemory.?

'Hobbit' movie adaptation to be a trilogy

By Reuters

Peter Jackson's film adaptation of "The Hobbit" will be split into three movies, the director and the studios behind the venture said on Monday.

Jackson said that given the richness of the story -- which is set 60 years before "The Lord of The Rings" -- he decided after wrapping up shooting recently in New Zealand that what was originally planned as two movies would now be a trilogy.

"I'm delighted that New Line, MGM and Warner Bros. are equally enthusiastic about bringing fans this expansive tale across three films," Jackson said in a statement.

"It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, 'a tale that grew in the telling'," Jackson said in a statement on his Facebook site.

"The Hobbit," written by J.R.R. Tolkien, is the prequel to the British author's epic fantasy "The Lord of the Rings," which Jackson made into three Oscar-winning films about 10 years ago.

A spokesman for New Line said the third "Hobbit" film would be released in the summer of 2014. The first two "Hobbit" movies, starring British actor Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, have already been announced for release in December 2012 and December 2013.

"It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made," Jackson said on his Facebook page.

"We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance," he added.

Will you see "The Hobbit"? Do you think the story needs three separate films? Tell us on Facebook.

Doug Ducey?s Entrepreneurial Biography Lifts Arizona and Creates Jobs

Home ? accomplishments ? July 29 2012 by AZ Views | View other posts by AZ Views

While voters debate the wisdom of placing a businessman in the nation?s highest office, there is evidence right here in Arizona that an accomplished entrepreneur makes a top-notch public servant.

Doug Ducey, Arizona?s State Treasurer, has shown in less than two years that business experience translates well to public office. As the guardian of the taxpayers? money, he has a record of accomplishment based in fiscal responsibility that supports a strong economy and creates jobs.

Ducey is the state?s banker and investment manager. He oversees more than $12 billion in state assets. His management skills were developed in a successful career in business, proving that prudent spending and saving in the private sector are the best preparation for government service.

Along with the state legislature and governor, Ducey has worked to balance the state budget and plan for a sound financial future. The state?s agencies are financially strong. Money has been put aside to guard against unforeseen budget shortfalls.

Ducey was elected to statewide office after success as a partner and CEO of Cold Stone Creamery. When he and his partners sold the business in 2007, it had more than 1,400 locations in all 50 states and 10 countries. He went on to pursue another entrepreneurial opportunity and became chairman of iMemories.

Ducey attended college in Arizona and started his businesses here. He knows the state well, its people, its needs, and its potential for growth and strong job creation.

Government needs accomplished businesspeople who know how to manage money and give taxpayers confidence that their hard earned dollars will be spent well. Doug Ducey has delivered the goods.

Roper Industries buying Sunquest for about $1.42B

(AP) ? Medical and industrial equipment maker Roper Industries Inc. is buying hospital software company Sunquest Information Systems Inc. for approximately $1.42 billion.

Sunquest, based in Tucson, Ariz., provides diagnostic and laboratory software to more than 1,700 hospitals globally.

"Sunquest meets all of Roper's key acquisition criteria and is an ideal fit with both our medical and software platforms," Roper Chairman, President and CEO Brian Jellison said in a statement Monday.

Roper says Sunquest will continue to operate under its own name and market products and services under their current brand names.

Privately held Sunquest is owned by a group that includes Huntsman Gay Global Capital and Vista Equity Partners. Sunquest President and CEO Richard Atkin says that the deal will supply the company with the finances and strategic resources needed to bolster its product offerings and expand into new areas.

The buyout is expected to close within 30 days.

Roper, based in Sarasota, Fla., also reported on Monday that its earnings rose 8 percent to $114.8 million, or $1.15 per share, from $106.3 million, or $1.08 per share, in the prior-year period. This met the expectations of analysts polled by FactSet.

Revenue for the three months ended June 30 climbed 4 percent to $724.9 million from $699.9 million. The results fell short of Wall Street's estimate of $746.9 million.

Roper also raised its full-year adjusted earnings outlook to a range of $4.84 to $5 per share from $4.75 to $4.91 per share, which accounts for the Sunquest deal and the stronger dollar. Wall Street expected $4.84 per share.

The company said that the forecast excludes acquisition-related expenses, debt extinguishment charges and the impact of any future acquisitions.

Ways to Improve Energy Efficiency

While it is possible to improve a home's energy efficiency in any climate, the predominant weather in an area has an impact on which efficiency measures will be the most valuable. For example, in especially cold areas such as Juneau or especially hot areas such as Phoenix replacement windows can cause a marked change in the cost of heating or cooling a house, whereas the impact of new windows in a more moderate climate will be less.

Any time you set out to improve your home's energy efficiency there are three dynamics to keep in mind. First, generating energy at your home from a clean source is far more efficient. Second, lighting your home more efficiently cuts down on energy consumption. Third, heating and cooling your home more efficiently is often the single most important area of overall efficiency.

The climate that you live in will, to a great degree, dictate your ability to generate power on your property. Those who live in a rainy climate, for example, won't benefit from solar panels the way that those who live in a sunny climate will. And it's pointless to install a windmill where there isn't any wind. But if you can generate power it's a good idea to do so: energy burns off in wires, so the shorter the distance is between production and plug the better.

One exception is a geothermal well, which generates power based on the exchange of heat between one end of a rod that is sunk deep into the ground and the other end of the rod, which is exposed. The temperature below the ground is fifty-six degrees Fahrenheit all the time, so any time the temperature above the ground is different (higher or lower) a geothermal well can generate electricity.

But producing power is only one way to increase efficiency. Reducing your home's consumption of power is just as important, and one of the most significant consumers of power is lighting. This can be changed by switching high efficiency light bulbs for the standard ones or by correcting bad habits. Simply turning the lights off when you leave a room can save a lot of electricity and substantially improve efficiency.

Beyond these simple fixes, it is possible to improve the way you light your home by making better use of natural light. In older homes that tend to have smaller windows, you can make a significant change by increasing the size and quantity of those windows. Even without structural changes, using mirrors to reflect (and reuse) natural light can greatly reduce your reliance on artificial lights powered by electricity.

Most people spend the most money on heating and cooling their homes, which means that heating and cooling use the most power. This can be mitigated by installing newer, more efficient equipment, as well as by improving the insulation of your home to bring it up to today's construction standards. The better insulated a home is, the less affected it is by the temperature outside.

In addition to re-insulating the home, replacing windows can demonstrably improve efficiency. The value of new windows has been well enough established that in hot places like Los Angeles and Phoenix replacement windows qualify for rebates from most utilities. Replacing the windows creates a good (and often subsidized) opportunity to expand the size of windows wherever possible, increasing the amount of natural light available inside the home.

Diary of a Desperate Exmoor Woman: Exmoor House vegetarian ...

As regular readers know, I'm not exactly a foodie and, left to my own devices, I will happily eat the same thing (or nothing) day after day. ?But the one thing that does get me salivating are Rosi Davis' tweets about the food she's serving at her Exmoor guest house.

So I said to her, 'Hey, Rosi...how about doing me a blog post.' ?Cos this is the season of barbecues and picnics and really, us vegetarians tend to draw the short straw - a handful of crisps and the odd corn on the cob, if we're lucky.

Anyhow, Rosi said yes, so I'll handy you over without further ado...

Rosi Davis: ?Here are some ideas for summery vegetarian food that you could use for picnics and barbeques. At our guest house at Wheddon Cross on Exmoor we specialise in providing food to suit peoples? dietary requirements ? we design the menus around our guests each day - and much of this article is based on dinner recipes we use for guests who don?t eat meat or fish. I?m an omnivore, my husband Frank (who?s the chef) is definitely a carnivore ? but we both just love good food and really enjoy experimenting with taste and texture. I?ve avoided being too prescriptive, so haven?t given detailed recipes here: the aim is more to help inspire you.

Picnics

Vegetarian scotch eggs

I had the idea for this a few weeks ago, we tried it out on ourselves first (as we always do) and it?s had the seal of approval from guests. The ?scotch? bit is pulse based; it can be any mixture that is the right sort of consistency to be moulded around the egg and not fall to pieces when fried. Coat peeled hardboiled eggs with, for example, flat green lentils cooked till soft with herbs and/or spices and (technical term) mushed up. You could also try using your favourite falafel-type chickpea mixture? or a nut roast recipe, if it?s the right sort of texture. You need to put a double layer of breadcrumbs (beaten egg, crumbs, beaten egg, crumbs) on the scotch eggs once they?re assembled, then deep-fry them. The scotch eggs go nicely with a garlicky mayonnaise or a tomatoey dip.

Quiches, pasties, filo parcels

Some suggested fillings: tomatoes and mixed peppers; goat?s cheese with spinach and mushrooms; brie with courgettes (Somerset brie is made with vegetarian rennet); blue cheese, cream cheese and lovage herb (Exmoor Jersey Blue cheese, made with vegetarian rennet, is very blue and tastes deliciously creamy); mixed mushrooms; spicy lentils.

Omelette wrap & roll (thanks to Michelle Vickers of Ras Mbisi Lodge for the inspiration for this one)

Make omelettes with your choice of fillings (or just spice ?em up a bit). The omelettes need to be about the same size as the wraps you?re using. Just use a small amount of filling, and don?t make it chunky ? the omelettes don?t want to be too thick, or the wraps will split. Place each omelette on a wrap or soft tortilla, and roll up. Cut into slices diagonally for a pretty pinwheel effect.

Halloumi and courgette burgers We found this recipe in the Morrison?s magazine. We adapted it a bit for our guests, but the original version is also wonderful: the link is here.?

You could do the burgers directly on the barbeque, or in a griddle or pan (definitely use a griddle if you want to do the aubergine slices).

Vegetable kebabs

Always good! We use aubergine, peppers, square slices of onion, courgette, cherry tomatoes, button mushrooms? Marinate the cubes of aubergine in olive oil first. The squares of onion are good for holding things in place; watch out that the cherry tomatoes don?t split. Once your kebabs are assembled on their skewers, brush everything with olive oil (flavoured with herbs, chilli etc if you like) before cooking; baste with oil while they?re cooking if necessary.

The best garlic mushrooms

Use big flat mushrooms (e.g. portabella). No need to peel them, just wipe any dirt off. Remove the stem if you like. Spread the gills side liberally with garlic or herb (or garlic and herb) butter. If you?re making garlic butter, try baking the garlic beforehand for a lovely mellow flavour; if you?re using herbs add a splash of lemon or lime juice too. Wrap the mushrooms lightly in foil, to keep all the juiciness in, and barbeque till soft.

No summer meal is complete without them?here are a few with a slight difference.

Add a new dimension to a Russian salad (finely diced cooked potato & carrots, peas, bound with mayonnaise) by including a touch of smoked paprika.

Try ?coleslaw? made with grated carrots and courgettes instead of cabbage. Salt the courgettes lightly once grated and leave in a sieve for about an hour to drain, then rinse and squeeze out gently to get rid of the moisture. If you want a change from mayonnaise, use yoghurt, a light vinaigrette or just olive oil.

This is a simple and lovely pepper salad. Roast red peppers till the skin is charred and the flesh is tender; remove the skin (use the plastic bag trick*), slice and dress with olive oil, garlic and some ground cumin and/or coriander ? or whatever you fancy! It?s even better when left to marinate for several hours.

Tomato salad with mint instead of the ubiquitous basil makes a nice change.

If you?d like us to do the cooking for you, you?ll find details of our dinner bed & breakfast packages at http://www.exmoorhotel.co.uk?

We also do dinner for people who are not staying with us at Exmoor House; because we make everything ourselves, taking dietary needs and preferences into account, bookings are needed at least 24 hours in advance.

Rosi Davis, Exmoor House Wheddon Cross, Somerset

* The plastic bag trick for peeling roasted peppers: once they?re cooked, put the peppers into a freezer bag (or similar ? one that?s not going to melt) squeeze as much air out as you can, seal and leave till cool. The pepper skin should then be easy to pull off.

Record-Setting Electric Plane Flight Almost Didn't Make It [VIDEO]

Chip Yates already holds the record for piloting the fastest electric motorcycle, so why not try his hand at electric flight? The founder and CEO of Flight of the Century, which produces electric aircraft, has set the record for fastest manned flight in an electric plane at 202.6 mph. But Yates almost didn't make it after a scary in-flight hiccup.

[More from Mashable: Heart-Stopping Photos of Attempted Hijacking in China Go Viral]

Yates isn't an experienced pilot, but he did design the record-breaking, all-electric Burt Rutan Long-EZ plane. Yates and his team at Flight of the Century have developed what they're calling "infinite range" technology to enable continuous flight by using a series of in-flight charging aircraft.

It may sound like a science-fiction dream come true, but this technology hasn't been perfected quite yet. After breaking the speed record, the plane's battery unexpectedly died. Yates was forced to make a dead-stick landing, gliding the plane onto the landing track. We're glad to report that Yates made it to terra firma just fine as a two-time record breaker.

[More from Mashable: Aviation History Is Being Made Right Now, and You Can Watch Online]

Yates record is the first step in what he hopes will be an aviation revolution. Flight of the Century planes are outfitted with electric batteries, which when depleted are jettisoned and guided to a ground or ocean-based recharging station. A fresh battery is simultaneously launched on a drone airplane, with which the electric plane docks. With the ability to drop one or more batteries during a trip, Flight of the Century says its Long EZ planes will have up to 90% greater range than ordinary planes.

(AP) ? Facebook's stock hit a new low Friday after it reported lukewarm second-quarter results and didn't give an outlook for the coming months.

The stock fell $2.88, or nearly 11 percent, to $23.97 in afternoon trading Friday, after earlier trading as low as $22.28.

Facebook Inc.'s initial public offering of stock priced at $38, and its low had been $25.52, hit on June 6. The stock is now about 37 percent below its IPO price.

Facebook issued its first financial report as a public company after the market closed Thursday. The company reported slightly stronger-than-expected revenue and a gain in user numbers, but investors weren't impressed.

Although revenue grew 32 percent in the second quarter, growth has slowed from earlier this year and from previous years. That's a concern for a newly public company. Investors are willing to value new companies highly, even if they are not making a profit, because they expect booming revenue.

Baird's Colin Sebastian also pointed out that the company is spending more on technology and hiring, driving up expenses.

But he's not overly concerned. He backed his "Outperform" rating for Facebook, saying advertising revenue was better than expected and the company is improving its ability to make money from users who access Facebook from apps on their phones and tablet computers.

Other analysts remained positive, too. Of 27 analysts available from FactSet, 15 have "Buy" ratings or equivalent, while just three are a "Sell." Analysts tend to have longer-term views of stocks than many day-to-day investors.

Mobile and users in developing countries are driving growth in active monthly users, Sebastian said. Facebook had 955 million active monthly users as of June 30, up 29 percent from a year ago.

"We don't view these results as dramatically good or bad," said Citi analyst Mark Mahaney. "Key questions remain: the future of Facebook mobile monetization and the future of Facebook user engagement."

Analysts also cautioned that the stock could be volatile because Facebook didn't offer investors and financial analysts its outlook for the rest of the year.

Overall the company reported a loss of $157 million, or 8 cents per share, in the April-June period, mainly because of compensation expenses it incurred when it paid $1.3 billion in restricted stock and related taxes for employees as part of the IPO. The loss compared with earnings of $240 million, or 11 cents per share, in the second quarter a year ago.

The company's adjusted earnings of $295 million, or 12 cents per share, matched Wall Street's expectations.

Facebook's revenue of $1.18 billion was slightly higher than the $1.16 billion expected by analysts surveyed by FactSet.

The results came two months after Facebook's stock flopped on its first trading day, on May 18. The day began with glitches with the Nasdaq Stock Market that delayed trading by half an hour. It didn't get much better from there. Despite months of hoopla that had investors thinking it would soar, the stock closed just 23 cents above its $38 IPO price. It has not reached that level since.

Investors were holding out hope that Facebook would far exceed expectations ? even though the company effectively warned investors before its IPO that Wall Street's expectations were too high. In a filing issued a week before its IPO, for instance, Facebook said its mobile users are growing at a faster pace than the number of ads on its mobile platform.

Analysts took that as a sign that their estimates were out of whack and many of them reduced their estimates for Facebook's projected revenue and earnings.

Even though the number of people who use mobile devices and tablet computers to access Facebook had been growing fast, Facebook didn't start showing ads on its mobile app until this spring. Facebook had 543 million active monthly mobile users at the end of the quarter, a 67 percent increase from a year earlier.

In a conference call with analysts Thursday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook's mobile users are more active than those who use the personal computer version.

"On average mobile users are around 20 percent more likely to use Facebook on any given day," he said. "So mobile not only gives us the potential to connect more people with our services and also gives us the ability to provide more value and more deeply engaging experience."

Facebook said its revenue from advertising totaled $992 million, a 28 percent increase from the same quarter last year. That number accounted for 84 percent of total revenue. The company did not say what portion was from mobile advertising. The rest came from payments and other fees, money Facebook makes from Zynga games and other apps.

UK Information Commissioner Slams Google For Failure To Provide Street View Data

valmont_138_slamGoogle has been in ongoing discussions (some might say a war of words) with The UK's Information Commissioner. If you remember, Google's street cars captured all sorts of information other than just pictures, like WiFi nodes and even IP traffic, when they drove around. Google is fighting multiple cases across Europe with various public bodies about this. Today Google confirmed that it had located additional payload data collected by its Street View cars prior to May 2010 and the ICO, which has repeatedly asked Google to delete the extra data, has thrown a few choice words in Google's direction.

Delta shuts down Comair; workers given notice

Delta Air Lines is shutting down its shrunken, 35-year-old regional carrier Comair at the end of September as it switches to bigger jets and it is sending termination notices to its 1,700 remaining employees.

    1. New vacation necessity: professional photographer?

With friends and family increasingly scrutinizing vacation photos via Facebook, some travelers are hiring professional photographers to capture lasting memories of their trip.

Comair is down to 290 flights a day. More than 1,000 Comair employees are in the Cincinnati and northern Kentucky region, some 700 of those in Kentucky.

Comair has slashed its fleet, flights and workforce in the last seven years. Delta said the smaller regional planes are expensive to fly because they are not as fuel-efficient and cost more to maintain as the fleet ages.

"We just really couldn't get the cost structure to where we wanted to get it," said Don Bornhorst, senior vice president of Delta Connection and a former Comair president. "It ultimately was a cost issue; it wasn't a quality issue with Comair. They're a good airline, great employees, very innovative ... we just could not solve the cost issues."

Delta, based in Atlanta, had about 500 of the 50-seat regional jets in 2008 and plans to reduce that to 125 within two years. Most of that flying will be done by new 76-seat jets as well as the 117-seat Boeing 717sthat Delta is leasing from Southwest Airlines.

Delta said Friday that it has stopped flying 16 of the remaining Comair 50-seaters, and will lease the carrier's other 28 planes to other operators. Bornhorst said employees have 60-day termination notices. A small group of employees will remain after the Sept. 29 shutdown to handle details of the closure.

Comair handles only about 1 percent of Delta's flying, so the closure won't result in significant changes to Delta's network. Delta also said it won't mean fewer flights out of Comair's base at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. Besides Cincinnati, Comair also has hubs in Detroit and at New York's JFK and LaGuardia airports.

Comair was founded in 1977, flying three propeller-driven Piper Navajo aircraft. It started operating as Delta Connection in 1984 and became a wholly owned subsidiary of Delta in 2000. Comair helped expand the regional jet business when it began flying Bombardier CRJ jets.

"As you can imagine, we're all very sad," said Lynn Dziad, spokeswoman for the Teamsters local that represents more than 400 flight attendants. She marked her 22nd anniversary with Comair just last week. "It's been a wonderful company. A lot of incredible people have worked here."

Kentucky's governor, Steve Beshear, said the Delta action is a blow to the region because of the job losses, and the Democrat called it "terribly disappointing." Kentucky will try to help affected workers, he said in a statement.

"Today's announcement is sad news for Cincinnati, as 300 southwest Ohio families will be looking for new opportunities as Comair ceases operations," Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, a Republican from the Cincinnati area, said in a statement. He said he has pressed Delta to offer opportunities for impacted workers. He added that Delta has committed to keeping up its Cincinnati area schedule, "which is important for Cincinnati's business community as they look for opportunities to grow and build their businesses across the nation and the world."

Aviation analyst Mike Boyd of The Boyd Group said he expected the Comair shutdown, because the regional airline business doesn't work anymore.

"It's not going to turn around," Boyd said. "Delta is quite correctly saying 'We've got to get rid of these uneconomic airlines.' "

Before entering bankruptcy protection in September 2005, Comair had more than 7,000 employees and 1,160 flights. Comair and Delta emerged from bankruptcy reorganization in April 2007.

Forty-nine people were killed when Comair Flight 5191 crashed on Aug. 27, 2006 in a field near Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Ky., after trying to take off from a runway that was too short for commercial jets. The National Transportation Safety Board found the pilots failed to notice they were on the wrong runway.

Delta had talked to prospective buyers for Comair, without success. It sold its other regional airlines ? Compass and Mesaba ? in 2010. Those carriers still operate flights for Delta, as do several other companies.

Shares of Delta Air Lines Inc. rose 3 cents to $9.44 in afternoon trading Friday.
