As many of my regular viewers to this web blog know, there are many factors contributing to childhood obesity. I post daily here about it, whether news print articles, opinions, feedback, or just personal opinion.
Recently, I wrote an article for Yahoo! (click here) about childhood obesity. I started searching for sources for this article, and received over 100 responses to the question, ?What do you think caused the rise in childhood obesity?? Responses came from professional and Olympic athletes, fitness experts, health experts, nutritionist, and parents.
I was unable to use everyone?s feedback, but thought it would be great to post some of their responses on my blog in a new web series, ?What Causes Childhood Obesity.? I hope that you enjoy the opinions here from various individuals. Please remember, my including their posts does not necessarily mean I agree or endorse their opinion, rather, a place to share other people?s thoughts.
As Einstein eloquently put it ?you cannot solve a problem with the same level of thinking that existed when it was created?
This is the core issue with childhood obesity and as hard as we are trying to make superficial changes without addressing the root causes we will continue to see this epidemic on a persistent rise.
Either because of the economics or society pressure it looks like no body is ready to really take this issue heads on including medical professionals.
It is disingenuous that we as a society that gives babies so much sugar (see formula label), in their milk, second ingredient in baby yogurt and that includes conventional and organic is sugar for baby 6m+, then rice cereal is the most highly recommended first food for babies by pediatricians, white rice when digested turns into sugar, then babies are feed food with suboptimal nutrition and we wonder why they are sick with recurring ear infections, running noses etc, Babies get sick because their immune system is compromised due to eating food that has literally been cooked to death and stayed on the shelves for 2 years.
To really start addressing the issue of childhood obesity we must change the way we feed our babies. Start your baby off eating real food like avocado, squash, carrot or what ever real food you have at home, feed them anything other than overly processed white rice that is completely devoid of nutrients. As a mother with a 7 years old son who has never had an ear infection in his life I can tell you that the food your feed your babies has everything to do with their future health. Though genetics might play a role in illness we have to keep in mind that a majority of illness are earned by our feeding/eating food choices.
