How the major stock indexes fared on Wednesday

Stocks ended lower Wednesday for the third day in a row, disappointed by the Federal Reserve's ambiguous statement on the economy. Technical problems at a major trade processor also yanked some shares around wildly in the opening minutes of trading.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 37.62 points, or 0.3 percent, to 12,971.06.

The Standard & Poor's 500 fell 4 points, or 0.3 percent, to 1,375.32.

The Nasdaq composite index fell 19.31 points, or 0.7 percent, to 2,920.21.

For the week:

The Dow is down 104.60 points, or 0.8 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 10.65 points, or 0.8 percent.

The Nasdaq composite is down 37.88 points, or 1.3 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 753.50 points, or 6.2 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 117.72 points, or 9.4 percent.

The Nasdaq composite is up 315.06 points, or 12.1 percent.
