Vast majority of coupon users influenced by coupons

How much do coupons affect new purchasing decisions? graph of japanese statisticsMobile Marketing Data Labo recently published the results of a survey into coupon usage, specifically looking at differences between smartphone and feature phone usage patterns.

Demographics

Between the 21st and 24th of February 2013 500 people who had used coupons were selected to complete the survey. Furthermore, 250 of these people selected were feature phone users, and the other 250 smartphone users. All were aged 20 or older, but no further demographics were provided.

I relatively rarely use coupons. I have a small repertoire of restaurants I like to visit, so I already know which allow coupons. Specifically, Satoyama Dining gives me a 10% off coupon if I complete the questionnaire after eating, and Kamakura Pasta (branches everywhere) who occasionally send me three 10% off coupons, each with slight variations on my name spelling!

Online poker back: Legal site to launch in Vegas

(AP) ? A Las Vegas-based social gambling company says it will launch the first legal, real-money poker website in the United States.

Ultimate Gaming will only accept wagers from players in Nevada for now, but the site likely represents the shape of things to come for gamblers across the country.

Never fully legal, Internet poker has been banned in the United States since 2011.

More recently, the federal government softened its stance on Internet betting and three states ? New Jersey, Delaware and Nevada? have legalized some form of online wagering.

With Tuesday's launch, Nevada wins the race to bring Texas Hold 'em back to the Internet.

Ultimate Gaming executives say they hope to prove online poker can be done well, and encourage other states to tap into the market.

Pathological gambling caused by excessive optimism

Apr. 29, 2013 ? Compulsive gamblers suffer from an optimism bias that modifies their subjective representation of probability and affects their decisions in situations involving high-risk monetary wagers. This is the conclusion drawn by Jean-Claude Dreher's research team at the CNC (Centre de Neurosciences Cognitives, CNRS / Universit? Claude Bernard Lyon 1). These findings, published in the May print edition of Psychological Medicine, could help explain and anticipate certain individuals' vulnerability to gambling, and could lead to new therapeutic approaches.

A growing number of gamblers suffer from pathological gambling, a disease that is usually characterized as either a loss of impulse control or a behavioral addiction. It results in an inability to limit the frequency of gambling and the amount of money wagered. This increasingly common psychiatric disorder creates financial, professional and personal hardships that can have severe consequences for the patients and the people around them. The mechanisms responsible for its emergence and development remain largely unknown, which limits the clinician's ability to proceed with a diagnosis, prognosis or effective treatment for this condition.

In this study, the researchers set out to test and verify the hypothesis that links pathological gambling to an alteration of probabilistic reasoning. The capacity to reason in probabilistic terms appears only at an advanced stage of human intellectual development (in fact, the basic concept of probability is not fully understood until the age of 11 or 12). Pioneering research in the late 1970s had already shed light on the difficulties that people experience in situations involving risk or uncertainty. These difficulties are reflected in the development and perpetuation in adults of cognitive biases1 specific to probabilistic decision-making, one of the most common being probability distortion (2).

The researchers conducted an experiment on compulsive gambling patients using a standard experimental economics task and a mathematical model for measuring both probability distortion and a more general optimism bias in relation to high-risk bets. The primary result obtained confirms the general hypothesis of a distortion, associated with pathological gambling, in the subjective representation of probabilities. The results also show that the compulsion to gamble is not explained by an exaggerated distortion of probability, but rather by an increased optimism bias. In other words, regardless of the objective probability of winning a high-risk bet, gamblers tend to act as though this probability were greater than it actually is. The researchers also observed that in the patient population under study, the intensity of this bias was significantly correlated to the severity of the symptoms.

For clinical psychiatrists, the simplicity of the procedure used to reach this conclusion could offer a rapid and reliable way of measuring the representation of probability, thus allowing them to refine both their diagnoses and therapeutic decisions. This study raises many new questions for researchers in the cognitive neurosciences: how does the brain represent the probability of winning? How do the cerebral structures responsible for this representation interact with the structures involved in the development and perpetuation of an addiction? Is a pathological gambler's particular relationship to probability accompanied by an increased sensitivity to reward and/or insensitivity to monetary loss? These important questions are now being investigated at the CNC.

(1) Internal or external influence causing an alteration of human judgment or perception.

(2) Identified by the Nobel laureates Kahneman and Tversky in 1979, probability distortion is characterized by the overestimation of low probabilities and underestimation of high probabilities.

SoftBank allows Sprint to conduct talks with Dish

(AP) ? Sprint Nextel says SoftBank is allowing it to seek more information from Dish Network related to its rival bid for the third-largest U.S. cellphone company.

Overland Park, Kan.-based Sprint has agreed to sell 70 percent of itself to Japan's Softbank Corp. for $20.1 billion. But it recently got a competing $25.5 billion offer from Dish Network Corp. for the whole company.

Under the agreement with SoftBank, Sprint can enter into a non-disclosure agreement and talks with Dish so it can clarify and obtain additional information from Dish related to its bid for the company.

Sprint isn't allowed to provide non-public information to Dish and can't enter into negotiations with the company.

SoftBank says it remains confident in its offer and expects the deal to close in July.

The Last Stand Blu-ray Review | AVForums.com - UK Online

"Radio? We ain't got no damn radio. We got nunchucks, though!"

After a fan-pleasing cameo in The Expendables, which was then woefully extended for the inferior sequel, we now get Arnold Schwarzenegger's fully-fledged return to the explosive genre that he helped define. The last time we saw him in a starring role was in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and The Last Stand marks the beginning of a new phase in the screen icon's legendary career.

But fans would do well to remember that after a ten year gap, even Mr. Universe needs to ease himself gently back on to the horse again.

This is a concept-movie. The suits summon Stateside the slick and stylish breakneck visionary behind the severe psycho chillers I Saw The Devil and A Tale of Two Sisters, and the off-the-scale insanity of The Good, The Bad, and The Weird, wooing him with oodles of cash and big name...

Picture

This UK release from Lionsgate sees the film presented at 2.35:1 via AVC.

The film has a rather annoying visual look that is dry, dazzling and bleached-out with either neon, headlights or spotlights, but mainly just plain squint-heavy sunlight that is hugely contrived and rather too stereotypical ? the dusty, desaturated Black Hawk Down look - but this is still a terrific video transfer that replicates the image I saw theatrically with fine detail and accuracy. Perhaps a little too much accuracy if I?m honest, because that green-screen finale is all-too apparent in this transfer. I don?t recall it being quite so obvious at the flicks as it appears on disc.

I may have grown tired of this particular visual aspect, personally, but technically speaking, though, this is an excellent transfer. There are no issues with DNR, aliasing, artificial sharpening, banding or aberrant noise. But the image strictly adheres to a specific design aesthetic that favours Western-style shadows and a cold, hard glare. Although desert-set, the shoot was a chilly affair and the low position of the sun makes for some interesting lighting and camera angles. The image does, therefore, feel quite cold.

Detail is very good indeed. There are some tremendous close-ups. Arnie looks seriously weathered and leathered nowadays, and no attempts to mask this get by the scrutiny of the image, which hauls up as many cracks and crevices in that iconic face as the frame finds in the rugged landscape beyond it. Wounds are also sharply rendered. The working parts of the various firearms are clinically revealed, and if you are anything like me then you will be salivating over the cascades of ammo and the locking and loading of 7.62 rounds in Sarah?s sniper rifle. That's if you aren't already salivating over Sarah! Eyes are bright and clear. Hair is awarded finite delineation, and sandy bursts of bullet-kicked dust are equally as sharp. The distant landscape is also clean and crisp, and the buildings and windows and streets of night-time Vegas (it isn?t really Vegas, and you can tell, but that?s irrelevant) are reasonably detailed and all of this is conveyed with a better than average sense of depth and three-dimensionality.

There are bold colours offered up too, despite the high contrast glaze. Blood might not be theatrically hued and veers far more towards a realistic shade, but it still stands out proudly. The colours of the vehicles are arrestingly bright and bold, and deliciously capped-off with a pleasing metallic gleam. Arnie's pilfered red sports car is really resplendent. The yellow of the school-bus-cum-war-wagon is reassuringly vivid, the muzzle-flashes and the relatively few explosions just as impressively vigorous. The dusty beige cop uniforms of Arnie?s posse are suitably earthy, and I love the way that Dinkum?s bright orange flare-pistol stands out against the image, too.

On the darker front, you should find that blacks are solid and stable, but they are not impenetrable. In fact, the hi-def digital photography gives them a softer feel that can detract from the night-time sequences, such as the firefight that reveals the goons? attempts to build the border-straddling bridge. There is nothing wrong with them, you understand. It is just the photography and the processing that denies them that stygian depth that would give some scenes more of an edge.

However, it is all good stuff, folks. 9 out of 10.

Picture score : 9

Sound

Lionsgate?s reputation for providing their action movies with supreme kick-ass sound-mixes on Blu remains untarnished with a blistering DTS-HD MA 7.1 track that pulls no punches and supplies a wealth of room-battering audio devastation that is bound to satisfy the adrenaline-junkie lurking within everyone. With super fast cars hurtling down freeways, copious grinding, high-speed impacts, all manner of destructive firepower unleashed and a keen sense of wraparound immersion, The Last Stand sounds bloody good. And your neighbours may well back me up on this.

Dialogue is absolutely fine. The forgettable score comes across well. Separation, depth and nuance are not neglected, and the whole track sounds crisp, solid, detailed and alive.

The really good stuff, as you would expect, comes when things get all dangerous and deadly, and the bad boys come out to play.

This is a film about guns and cars. And everyone in your street will know that from the start. Some ace ballistic reports boom and blast their way around the full 7.1 set-up. Ricochets tumble and whine at wild spinning angles. Movement across the speakers is smooth and credible. The severe gut-punching high-velocity rounds really kick through the air with a convincing mini-sonic boom, and some single-shots carry a cool echo on the wind. There are no wimpy gunshots here, thank you very much, and even if we aren?t burying ourselves away from immense flurries of fire from multiple weapons as in The Expendables, say, we still feel the power and recoil from extremely impressive one-shots and mini-bursts of auto carnage. Detail even goes as far as to denote the strangled thud as bullets rip through metal with a variety of authentically aggressive acoustics. Aye, this is a fine and furious presentation of mayhem.

The gut-rumbling rev-rush of Cortez?s souped-up Corvette provides ferocious sub-roar and speaker tremors. I love the staccato rattle of the corn-cobs pelting the windscreens as the cars chew their way through the corn-fields. Incidentally, when the two vehicles slow down to a snail's pace and play cat 'n' mouse, there is some terrifically realised snapping and cracking of the corn-stems as well. Strong left to right whooshes (and vice-versa) also bring grins to the face. Helicopter rotors are positioned well, with distinct elevation and meaty whup-whups. Bodily impacts also smack home. There really isn?t anything more to say on the matter ... other than ....

Crank it up and let it rip. It?s a good ?un.

Sound score : 9

Extras

This UK edition appears to contain all the supplements that will be found on the US release. Commencing with a pretty enjoyable making-of called Not In My Town that lasts for 28 minutes, Lionsgate offer a reasonable, though fairly typical-sounding batch of fluffy, back-slapping material and action-fare add-ons.

And yet, this is actually pretty cool.

The making-of makes it clear that there was a lot of fun and candid on-set antics that kept the whole shebang running smoothly, and the little feature is nowhere near as patronising as most of its ilk tend to be. All the main actors, bar Whitacker, get plenty of air-time to discuss the guns, the film, their characters, Arnie, the guns, Arnie, and the guns. And then some more about the guns. And Arnie. There is a fair amount of time devoted to the fighting, and we get to see Arnie learning his moves and going through the motions.

We even get a separate tour of The Dinkum Firearm and Historic Weaponry Museum and get to drool over the props and the real goodies that have been bestowed the production. A potted history is given for each of the guns, and some are shown being put through their paces on the range. Me likey.

Jamie Alexander and Johnny Knoxville were given video cameras to haul around during one day?s shooting in order to capture the good-natured banter, the scene preparations, and the personalities populating the set. This could so easily have become gag-inducing, and yet the ten-minute assemblage of footage is quite entertaining. We even see the actual shooting of Dinkum blowing up a bad guy with a flare-pistol. All of this stuff is covered in Actor-Cam Anarchy.

There is an interesting slew of Deleted and Extended Scenes. Now, even with this said, you can plainly see why most of these scenes and alterations were dropped or shortened. A large sequence details the early arrest of Frank Martinez that Ray makes after discovering he has broken into the pharmacy. Arnie is working hard in this scene and it is nice to watch for that alone, but it would have been a dreadful time-waster had it been left in the final cut. Other scenes add snippets here, or alter things slightly there, and there is one entire action sequence in which Cortez uses his car like a skateboard to circumvent a police trap that would have been great had it made the final cut. As it stand, it is presented with a combination of live-action and previz footage.

There is even much better alternative line between Arnie?s Sheriff and Luis Guzman?s Deputy Figgy. Set in Dinkum?s fine weapon-barn, Figgy is hefting the big Cimmerian-type sword and Ray comes out with a classic ? ?Who do you think you are, Conan the Barbarian?? ? which is much, much more satisfying than the actual line used in the film about Figgy being in the Crusades, itself a possible reference to the long-mooted, though now eclipsed historical epic that Arnie once had planned.

Cornfield Chaostakes a detailed look at the climactic car chase between Ray and Cortez, paying close attention to the stunts and specialised rigs to enable the cinematography. Decent.

I expected very little from this selection but, in truth, I quite enjoyed it.

Extras score : 6

Verdict

Well, thank Crom that Kim Jee-woon?s smoothbore actioner isn?t Arnie?s ?last stand?, and that he will be up and running with more brawny romps soon because, in many ways, this proves itself to be something of a non-event. The Oak was thoroughly lousy in the poor Expendables 2, and although considerably better here, he still appears to be slightly uncomfortable and slow, and less engaging than he really ought to be. Whereas Stallone has never really missed a beat, and has exploded back into top form ever since his Rocky Balboa and Rambo 4 double-whammy, and even managed to come up with the goods in the laid-back yet violent stride down the wrong tracks of New Orleans in the Bullet to the Head, which I would say has the edge over this, Arnie has yet to prove himself worthy of the screen-dominating star-billing he could previously lay claim to. We all love the big guy, but we shouldn?t simply be content for him to strut out by-the-numbers, lesser material like this because we are still revelling in nostalgia for the good old days. So, age notwithstanding, I?m afraid that we expect greater things from his next offering.

Peter Stormare is ludicrously bad and just why the hell is there so much screentime allowed for Whittaker and that banal and utterly uninteresting federal chase? The action is, ironically, pedestrian, and the strong bloody violence doesn?t work with the freewheeling tone of the rest of the film, often striking a bum note against the character-based humour and the quirky, laidback banter.

And yet, when all said and done, there is still something quite likeable, and almost cosy about The Last Stand. My initial indifference with it has melted, allowing me to warm to the characters and the scenario to the point where I know accept the movie as a lightweight Saturday afternoon matinee type of deal. There?s absolutely no reason why you shouldn?t feel the same, once you?ve given it a chance.

Lionsgate provide a very good transfer. The contrast is blown-out for that dusty, high-glare sheen, but detail is excellent. And there is no messing about with that alluring 7.1 audio track. Lionsgate can sit back in the knowledge that they are still at the top of the boom-boom-shake-the-room soundmix league, although this wraparound won?t challenge some other madcap mixes out there. The extras are actually good fun.

Being cynical, I would suggest that this is Arnie on his ?Last? legs, but we know that he has some very interesting productions in the pipeline, not the least of which is his team-up with Stallone in the now re-titled Escape Plan (which is a very poor alteration from the original moniker of The Tomb).

Long may he ?be back?!

First edition of a bookworm's genome

Friday, April 26, 2013

It has co-existed quietly with humans for centuries, slurping up the spillage in beer halls and gorging on the sour paste used to bind books. Now the tiny nematode Panagrellus redivivus (P.redivivus) has emerged from relative obscurity with the publication of its complete genetic code. Further study of this worm, which is often called the beer-mat worm or, simply, the microworm, is expected to shed new light on many aspects of animal biology, including the differences between male and female organisms and the unique adaptations of parasitic worms.

Using next-generation sequencing technologies, a research team led by Jagan Srinivasan, now an assistant professor of biology and biotechnology at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), discovered just over 24,000 putative genes encoded in the worm's DNA?nearly the same number as in the human genome. The team also measured the amount and characteristics of RNA molecules transcribed from those genes to direct cellular processes?that collection of data is called the worm's transcriptome. The genome data published by Srinivasan and colleagues marks the first time a free-living nematode outside of the widely studied C. elegans immediate family has been sequenced.

The researchers detail their findings in the paper, "The Draft Genome and Transcriptome of Panagrellus redivivus Are Shaped by the Harsh Demands of a Free-Living Lifestyle," published in the April 2013 edition of the journal Genetics.

"Humans and nematodes share a common ancestor that lived in the oceans more than 600 million years ago," Srinivasan said. "Many of the basic biological processes have been conserved over the millennia and are similar in Panagrellus and humans. So we believe there is a lot to be learned from studying this organism."

Srinivasan led the P.redivivus sequencing project while working as a postdoctoral researcher at the California Institute of Technology in the laboratory of Paul Sternberg, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator and the Thomas Hunt Morgan Professor of Biology at Caltech. Adler Dillman, a graduate student at Caltech, worked closely with Srinivasan on the project and shares first-author status of the new study. Sternberg is the senior author.

Srinivasan joined the WPI faculty in the fall of 2012 and has established his own research program using the microworm and its scientifically more famous cousin, Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), as model systems to study the neurobiological basis of social communication and how organisms react to environmental cues.

In recent years C. elegans has emerged as a star in the biomedical research world. In 1998 it became the first multicellular organism to have its genome sequenced. The experience gained from that work was fundamental to the successful completion of the Human Genome Project. Nobel prizes in 2002, 2006, and 2008 were awarded to researchers who made extraordinary discoveries studying C. elegans.

Like C. elegans, the microworm P. redivivus is a free-living nematode found in many environments around the world. An adult microworm is about 2 millimeters long and has approximately 1,000 cells. Despite its small size, the worm is a complex organism able to do all of the things animals must do to survive. It can move, eat, reproduce, and process cues from its environment that help it forage for food, seek out mates, or react to threats. Unlike C. elegans, however, P. redivivus is a gonochoristic species, meaning it has male and female individuals who must mate to reproduce. In contrast, C. elegans has evolved to be primarily a self-fertilizing hermaphrodite, producing both eggs and sperm in the same individual. (There are some male-only C. elegans worms, but they are rare in the wild.)

"Because we see true male and female individuals, Panagrellus will be a powerful model system for studying the differences between the sexes and the processes that the organism uses to find and interact with a mate," Srinivasan said.

Both P. redivivus and C. elegans are well suited for laboratory research, Srinivasan noted. The worms are easily cultured and have a short lifecycle, growing from embryo to adult in about four days. Adults live for approximately three weeks and can produce as many as 40 offspring each day. This lifecycle makes them ideal for genetic studies. Furthermore, the worms are transparent. Under a microscope researchers can look into a worm's body and see almost every cell in the living animal. They can see the cell nuclei, tag molecules with glowing fluorescent markers, and capture images of biological processes from the moment of fertilization to maturity.

As a free-living species, the microworm is considered to be an ancestor of other small worms that have evolved into parasites and colonize specific plants or animals (including humans) to survive. Studying the differences between the microworm and parasitic species will become another important area of research, Professor Sternberg noted. "Of course we want to know more about parasitic worms, given their impact on people and the environment," Sternberg said. "To know about parasites, however, you have to know about the free-living worms to place the bizarre features of parasites into context."

The current study identified the number, location, and composition of genes and RNA transcript in the microworm, and found significant and surprising differences between the P.redivivus genome and that of C. elegans even though the worms look nearly identical to the naked eye. For example, the early analysis of the microworm genome suggests that a large collection of genes have evolved as defenses against viruses and other pathogens the worms encounter in the environment?hence the "harsh demands" of their lifestyle as referenced in the paper's title.

"Studying how the genomes differ, and what processes are driven by those differences, should prove to be insightful," Srinivasan said. "Sequencing the genome and transcriptome is an important first step in what we believe will be a rich new field of study for fundamental biological processes that control development and behavior, not only in the worms, but also in humans."

American charged, ex-general held in Venezuela

The 35-year-old filmmaker from California was arrested Wednesday, by Venezuelan authorities who are accusing him of fomenting post election violence on behalf of the U.S. government. (AP) ? An American filmmaker was formally charged late Saturday by Venezuelan officials who accuse him of paying right-wing groups to foment postelection unrest on behalf of U.S. intelligence.

The federal prosecutor's office said Timothy Tracy, 35, of West Hollywood, California, was charged with crimes including conspiracy, association for criminal purposes and use of a false document.

On Thursday, President Nicolas Maduro said he had personally ordered Tracy's arrest on suspicion of "creating violence in the cities of this country" in the wake of an April 14 presidential election narrowly won by the hand-picked successor to Hugo Chavez.

Opposition candidate Henrique Capriles contends the election was stolen from him by fraud, setting up postelection tensions and bitter accusations between Venezuela's government and opposition.

Friends say Tracy is an innocent, self-funded documentary filmmaker with no political aims or government ties.

The U.S. government has also said Tracy is innocent but declined comment on the specifics of his case.

Venezuela's national prosecutor's office said a judge had ordered Tracy held until further notice in a jail run by the national intelligence service in the capital, Caracas, because he presented a risk of flight.

Tracy had a translator and private lawyers hired by him, or on his behalf, during the hearing, prosecutors said.

The Georgetown University English graduate was a story consultant on the 2009 documentary "American Harmony," about competitive barbershop quartet singing, and produced the recent Discovery Channel program "Under Siege," about terrorism and smuggling across the U.S.-Canada border as well the History Channel series "Madhouse," on modified race-car drivers in North Carolina.

Separately, Venezuelan officials said Saturday that they have arrested a retired general who had become a fierce critic of the government, a detention the opposition called part of a hardening crackdown in the wake of the disputed election.

Retired Brig. Gen. Antonio Rivero gained fame for denouncing Cuban involvement in the Venezuelan military in 2010 and became a prominent member of the opposition, participating in post-vote protests this month.

Rivero appeared in a brief video of a postelection protest that prosecutors played for the press Thursday after announcing Tracy's arrest. They said the video was taken from Tracy's belongings, along with another short video that shows a group of young people talking, in what appears to be a joking, sarcastic manner, about being paid many millions of dollars to participate in anti-government demonstrations.

In a snippet that is clearly heavily edited, Rivero discusses demonstrators' use of clubs and rocks in a clash with National Guard members. It is unclear, because of the editing and brevity of the clip, whether he is encouraging them to use weapons or discouraging them.

The footage appeared to be taken at a protest in Caracas soon after the vote results were announced, in which university students and National Guard members traded rocks and tear gas.

Leopoldo Lopez, national coordinator of the opposition Voluntad Popular party, called Rivero's detention illegal and part of a campaign to arrest and "morally assassinate" Venezuela's opposition leadership.

"The government errs if it thinks we are going to falter in our just solicitude that the truth be known about the April 14" election, Lopez said. Rivero is a member of Lopez's party.

Venezuela's Public Ministry released a statement saying that Rivero would be presented before a tribunal "for his presumed connection to violent acts that have occurred recently in this country."

The statement said the retired general was arrested by Venezuela's intelligence service on Saturday.

The government says postelection attacks by Capriles supporters killed nine members of the ruling Chavista movement, left dozens injured and damaged government offices and medical clinics.

The opposition vehemently denies the accusations.

Times Square could have been next

By Mark Hosenball and Edith Honan

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - The two men accused of carrying out last week's bombing of the Boston Marathon planned a second bomb attack on New York's Times Square, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said on Thursday.

The brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's original intent when they hijacked a car and its driver in Boston last Thursday night was to drive to New York with bombs and detonate them in Times Square, but their plan fell apart when they became embroiled in a shootout with police.

"Last night we were informed by the FBI that the surviving attacker revealed that New York City was next on their list of targets," Bloomberg said at New York City Hall. "He and his older brother intended to drive to New York and detonate those explosives in Times Square."

One law enforcement source said earlier this was based on what surviving suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, told investigators in a Boston hospital. He is recovering from gunshot wounds in Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where he was formally charged on Monday with crimes that could carry the death penalty.

Tsarnaev's attorney, Miriam Conrad, declined to comment on Thursday on whether her wounded client was still talking with investigators.

Meanwhile, the father of the brothers said he planned to travel to the United States from Russia to bury his older son, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was killed in a police shootout.

"I am going to the United States. I want to say that I am going there to see my son, to bury the older one. I don't have any bad intentions. I don't plan to blow up anything," Anzor Tsarnaev told reporters in Makhachkala, the capital of Russia's Dagestan region.

The bombing killed three people and injured 264 others.

Near Washington, the focus remained on intelligence leading up to the Boston Marathon bombing. Tamerlan Tsarnaev had been on a federal database of potential terrorism suspects and that the United States had twice been warned about him by Russian authorities. Congressional testimony earlier in the week had focused on whether the Federal Bureau of Investigation made mistakes in tracking the ethnic Chechen.

"We're in the post-event witch hunt phase, which is predictable," said James Clapper, Director of National Intelligence, at a conference in Crystal City, Virginia. "I think it would be a real good idea to not hyperventilate for a while now until we actually get all the facts."

ARREST WARRANT FOR WIFE

Anzor's former wife, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, angrily denied that her son had any role in the attack and criticized police for shooting her 26-year-old son while apprehending him.

Tsarnaeva does not plan to accompany her former husband on his trip. One factor that may have influenced Zubeidat Tsarnaeva's decision not to travel with her former husband is an outstanding arrest warrant in Massachusetts.

A warrant for Zubeidat Tsarnaeva's arrest was issued on October 25 after she failed to make a court appearance on shoplifting-related charges, according to Natick District Court Clerk Brian Kearney.

Tsarnaeva was arrested in June at a Lord & Taylor department store on suspicion of shoplifting $1,624 worth of women's dresses, according to the Natick Police Department.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev's widow, 24-year-old Katherine Russell, also has a criminal record. In 2007, shortly after graduating from high school, she was arrested for stealing five items valued at $67.00 from an Old Navy in Warwick, Rhode Island.

Russell's lawyer, Amato DeLuca, said earlier this week that his client knew nothing about the Tsarnaev brothers' activities.

YOUNGER BROTHER IN HOSPITAL

The U.S. Marshals Service, which is responsible for holding and transporting suspects outside of prison, declined to comment on whether or when Dzhokhar Tsarnaev might be moved from the hospital.

"It is our policy not to comment on prisoner movements until they have been completed," said spokeswoman Lynzey Donahue. "We do ensure that prisoners in our custody receive medical services in a secure environment."

Nokia Lumia 520 review: does Nokia need another budget Windows Phone?

Nokia Lumia 520 review does Nokia need another budget Windows Phone

Oh, for an easy life. Sometimes it'd be nice to just read a phone's spec sheet, compare prices and make a decision. In a number of ways, the Nokia Lumia 520 looks like just the type of handset where this ought to be possible: it has the same reliable internals and happy design language that have already proven their worth in the Lumia 620, but it makes a couple of sacrifices for the sake of its £115 pay-as-you-go price tag in the UK -- which undercuts the higher model by a good £30-£50 depending on where you shop. It's even cheaper in the US, where a $150 Lumia 521 variant (not the one reviewed here) is scheduled for general availability on T-Mobile starting tomorrow.

These sacrifices seem straightforward enough, and they include things that many smartphone users may barely notice, such as the absence of a front-facing camera, camera flash module and NFC. The problem is that the specs are never the full story. Like any phone, the Lumia 520 comes with a few surprises. Read on and we'll try to root them out.

House Republican offers few assurances on immigration bill

By Thomas Ferraro and Richard Cowan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The push for comprehensive immigration legislation faces an uncertain fate in the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives even as Senate supporters voiced optimism on Thursday for overwhelming backing in that chamber.

As the Democratic Party-controlled Senate pushed ahead on an 844-page bill that aims to rewrite America's immigration law, the Republican-controlled House was still undecided on how broad of a bill it might consider - or even if it would advance legislation this year.

That was the message delivered Thursday by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, who told reporters that he would be introducing a series of individual bills, starting with legislation to help farmers get foreign workers and improving an electronic system to help businesses be sure they are hiring legal workers.

"We have made no decisions about how to proceed," Goodlatte said at a news conference, adding he did not know whether his committee would try to advance "individual bills or whether it would pertain to a larger bill."

He did however say that he hoped some sort of legislation could pass in 2013.

Goodlatte's uncertainty is in contrast to senators who have advanced a comprehensive immigration bill that is expected to be debated next month by the Senate Judiciary Committee. That measure would put the 11 million people living illegally in the United States on a 13-year path to citizenship.

Two authors of that bipartisan bill said on Thursday they are hopeful most Senate Democrats and Republicans will support their White House-backed measure.

"It is very doable," Republican Senator John McCain of Arizona said of the prospects of attracting wide bipartisan backing. Democratic Senator Charles Schumer of New York agreed.

The Senate Judiciary Committee plans to debate, and most likely amend, the newly introduced bill as Democrats aim to get full Senate approval by late June.

Goodlatte refused to set up any such timetable for House action.

Referring to the November, 2014 congressional elections, the Virginia Republican said: "Election years are more difficult than non-election years" for passing major, controversial legislation. "But I'll also say that it is far more important that we get this right this time...than live by any particular timetables."

Similarly, Goodlatte was non-committal when asked whether House legislation would contain provisions letting those who came to the United States illegally or overstayed their visas to eventually become U.S. citizens.

"What exactly can be done there remains to be seen," Goodlatte said.

On the hot-button issue of potential citizenship for undocumented residents, Goodlatte said: "I prefer not to see a special pathway to citizenship but a status that would give them some kind of legal status."

A 'NON-STARTER'

Immigration reform advocates have long insisted that legislation must be addressed in a comprehensive way rather than piecemeal and that the 11 million undocumented immigrants must be "brought out of the shadows" and set onto a road to citizenship. It is a 13-year-long road in the Senate bill that includes the payment of penalties for people who either entered the U.S. illegally or overstayed their visas.

McCain and Schumer, speaking at a breakfast roundtable with reporters sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor, said legislation without a pathway to citizenship would be a "non-starter."

They said their aim is to muster strong support, as many as 70 votes in the 100-member Democratic-led chamber, to help the measure's chances in the Republican-led House.

"It is a balanced bill," Schumer said. "I'm optimistic it will pass."

McCain and Schumer drafted the comprehensive measure with six other senators, three Democrats and three Republicans. It would bolster border security, help provide low- and high-skilled workers for businesses and create an earned pathway to U.S. citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants.

McCain said he called Representative Paul Ryan, the 2012 Republican vice presidential nominee, on Wednesday to thank him for publicly voicing support in recent days for comprehensive immigration reform.

"I believe in it," McCain quoted Ryan as telling him. Ryan is seen as an influential voice among conservatives who could help propel any bill in the House.

Even so, many conservative Republicans question whether any broad immigration legislation should be attempted until further security measures are in place along the southwestern border with Mexico.

Group calls on China to improve Internet security

(AP) ? An American business group has called on China to improve its Internet security, ease controls on Web use by businesses and open its online industries wider to foreign participation.

The appeal by the American Chamber of Commerce in China on Wednesday adds to pressure on Beijing to embrace global Internet standards following reports of cyberspying traced to China.

China's communist government operates an extensive Internet-monitoring system and tries to block access to material deemed subversive.

The Chamber of Commerce said companies see Internet access speed deteriorating and warned that security policies that "diverge from global practices" might hamper China's development.

The chamber appealed to Beijing to find ways to speed Internet access for businesses and to eliminate restrictions on use of foreign encryption and security software in China.

I have heard from a source that one pair is for a new dayflight from JFK - LHR

Perhaps it has to do with SEA? Or were there already slots for this?

In addition to the SEA flight in the ATI filing, there was also mention of a second daily between DTW-LHR and a possible SLC-LHR flight.

Are these slots from VS?
Quoting michman (Reply 3):

You have that link?

That would seemingly be related to VS and not an already occurred slot deal?

SEA is almost sure. For the second one, bets are open. I doubt that it will be for another JFK round-trip as DL and VS have to coordinate first their schedules between London and NYC. For example, DL 2 departs Heathrow at 1710 and VS 9 leaves LHR only 25 minutes later.
SLC ? additional DTW ? A big surprise ? With SEA, IAH and DFW are the main lacks in the DL / VS network ex LHR...
I believe the slots are from Alitalia. The morning Rome flight and a Milan flight have been added to LCY and dropped from LHR I think.
Quoting michman (Reply 3):
In addition to the SEA flight in the ATI filing, there was also mention of a second daily between DTW-LHR and a possible SLC-LHR flight.

That SLC_LHR flight would make more sense if they are trying to add to the LHR network...but...could a 764 do it?

I know this may never happen but i wish it'll be MCO! Connections would be easier for European citizens. It's hard to connect at LGW because usually it means that you'll have to stay overnight or travel across London through different airports.
Likely to be SEA and a 2nd DTW flight.
Quoting VCy (Reply 8):
I know this may never happen but i wish it'll be MCO!

You're right. Won't happen on DL, especially since they are wanting a JV with VS who operates the route into Gatwick. It's a highly leisure market and they won't waste a valuable Heathrow slot on Orlando. I can see them launching Los Angeles, Washington DC, Dallas long before Orlando.
Any chance of them operating anything other than 764s (and the one 763) to LHR?
Quoting VCy (Reply 8):
I know this may never happen but i wish it'll be MCO!

Such a low yielding route has nothing to do at LHR. Even BA with all their slots doesn't serve that route, so there is no way that DL would "waste" one of their slots on MCO.
Would a daylight flight from DTW make sense? Or would you lose productivity of the aircraft?
Quoting toltommy (Reply 13):
Would a daylight flight from DTW make sense? Or would you lose productivity of the aircraft?

Schedule-wise it would be fine. But daylight eastbound transatlantics only work between large O&D markets, since the schedule doesn't allow connecting feed on either end (leaves DTW too early, gets into LHR too late). And I can't really see DTW having enough demand on its own.

-Mir

Quoting VCy (Reply 8):
I know this may never happen but i wish it'll be MCO! Connections would be easier for European citizens.

DL + VS isn't going to support many European connections from LHR, and most Skyteam destinations MCO-LHR-XXX already have 1-stops MCO-JFK/ATL-XXX. MCO-LON really needs to survive on O&D.
They want to get an earlier evening departure out of DTW with an earlier arrival into LHR in addition to the current flight. The current flight departs after 10pm and doesn't arrive into LHR until around 11am. A daytime eastbound from DTW isn't going to be plausible.
Quoting kaitak (Reply 11):

Any chance of them operating anything other than 764s (and the one 763) to LHR?

SEA has turned into a 767-300 long haul hub for DL with CDG, KIX, PEK, PVG, HND, and the occasional additional AMS flight, so I would expect it to be a 763.
I though there was some mention of a slot buy from Atalia....maybe that was a rumor or one of the slots?

The possible cities Delta mentioned were SEA, 2nd DTW, and SLC but based on slots. That seems to be in order of importance. With the Virgin deal i think LHR slots will be possible and SLC will happen just maybe not soon. SEA seems like its gonna happen.

No.

The SEA slot is definately from Alitalia. Not sure about the other one, but I know it is not VS.

They have wanted RDU-LHR for years now.. I'm sure it's not for that, but who knows! ?
There is definitely not room for both AA and DL on rdu-lhr. Maybe they want in if AA leaves but no sign if them leaving.
Quoting kaitak (Reply 11):
Any chance of them operating anything other than 764s (and the one 763) to LHR?

IMHO, DL would rather have frequency than capacity on the route -> Between the lines the other longhaul aircraft would be better suited elsewhere. The 764 is configured to the highest spec in the DL fleet; in my opinion.

A 744 or 77L would be a nice picture; but I doubt it would happen.

I don't believe these slots could be used for a day time flight. IIRC both are set for morning arrival into LHR and evening flights from the US.
Quoting WesternA318 (Reply 7):
That SLC_LHR flight would make more sense if they are trying to add to the LHR network...but...could a 764 do it?

763
this. Third option replace one of the leased slot pairs.
Quoting ERJ170 (Reply 20):
They have wanted RDU-LHR for years now.. I'm sure it's not for that, but who knows! ?

Its not.

AA will have to leave before Delta started RDU-LHR.

In 2011, Delta operated 10 weekly flights between DTW and LHR: The early evening departure from DTW was daily. A later departure (~11:00PM) operated 3x weekly (Tue, Wed, Sat).. Did this second flight ever operate daily?
25 PSU.DTW.SCE: No. DL has never gone more than 10x per week on DTW-LHR. That particular slot was shared at 3x per week DTW, 4x per week ATL.
26 Deltal1011man: and then went to the 2nd or 3rd daily ATL-LHR flight.
27 cessna2: And still do. If AA leaves DL will take the route. If the new AA doesn't then DL will start CDG. Alot depends on what happens once all the mergers ar
28 questions: Could DL profitably deploy one of its 744s on a route to/from LHR? If so, which one(s)?
29 RyanairGuru: I disagree, for a start if RDU is profitable on O&D alone then it makes sense to keep it. Also don't forget that this flight is part of the JBA m
