CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A fire erupted Saturday morning inside a two-story home with no smoke detector, killing six children?and two adults, authorities said.
A woman and a baby were also hurt in the blaze, which was reported around 3:30 a.m.? Bob Sharp, assistant chief for the Charleston Fire Department, said the injured child was on life support.
Charleston Mayor Danny Jones said the two-story wood frame home did not have a working smoke detector. Jones told The Associated Press one smoke detector was found in a cabinet, but it was not functional.
It was not immediately clear how the blaze started.
Charleston police told WSAZ.com it appears two families were living in the home and all the? victims were related.
A woman who was inside the home at the time managed to escape and call for help, according to WCHS-TV.
It was the city?s deadliest fire in six decades, Jones told the AP.
